Tracks show? Oh no!

Yes, we're going to take it there! I talking about long, short, and medium hair. It's our crown and glory, while simultaneously being the first thing people notice about you. If someone was to ask you, what are you saying about yourself by having the hairstyle you have now, what would it be? How would you answer?

As a woman, I have went through many hair transitions. Not as many as most; but I've had my share. I've done things to my hair that I've shouldn't have done in the name of beauty and trying to make my appearance more attractive to the opposite of sex. Ultimately, that's why we do it ladies! Not just for ourselves and confidence, but to be attractive.  With that being said we must address the weave! Listen, it doesn't matter to me if you wear a weave, wig, lace front, or whatever; but if your going to wear it please wear it right! 

I'm going to keep it straight up real with you, I've seen women go in public with their tracks (weave) showing and swear they're the hottest chick moving! No my dear, please have a seat! You cannot conduct business with your tracks interrupting the conversation, I'm going to need you to fix that!

I have naturally long hair that doesn't cooperate with some styles that I want to do, also I know that most styles ( though are cute as hell) I can't pull off with just my hair; due to the lack of volume. With those styles I would need a weave just to make my hair look full; but I know that I wouldn't be able to keep up the maintenance, so I stick to what I know. 

In the past I've tried to get a quick weave (only once) and I swear I'll never do it again! Do y'all remember the movie Cone heads? Well, that's what I looked like with hair! I had too much real hair to pull off the look. I quickly took that mess out, got me a relaxer(years before I went natural), and a wrap styled my hair. Also, I tried to get my hair braided using human hair; only to have the braiding hair slid, YES SLID off of my real hair; because my hair is thin (again I lack volume)! 

 Ladies, my point is this...know what you can and can't do.

 No business person is going to take you seriously
if you look as if you've never made it past your first year of beauty school. First impressions last a lifetime, second impressions cement who you are. With that being said let's take a look at some BAD impressions that tracks have made:

But don't let the bad weave styles discourage you from being creative with your hair if you so chose to keep using a weave. In my own opinion, the point of wearing a weave is the same as wear great clothes. To look good and give you confidence. The best weaves are the ones that you can't tell its a weave. Confessions Of A Plus Size Fashion Blogger: It's So Hard To Be A Working Girl!

Hello curvaceous beauties! I want to talk with you guys about something that has been on my mind for a while, and it's being plus size in the work place. How do you feel about that? Has there ever been a time when you were passed up for a promotion, or passed over in an interview? I have, and my experiences are what I'm sharing today. I use to think that being qualified, and a skilled worker is was enough to gain a position (this was when I was younger), now I know the other factors that determines one's career path.

QUESTION: How hard is it to be the only plus size person in your department or company? Do you feel awkward?

  One factor that is timeless is the all important 'look' of the applicant. I know this shouldn't matter, it most of the time  it doesn't; however there are those rare times when it's more than obvious what's on someone's mind when meeting someone for the first time or when considering them to be promoted. 

My Story:

My experience with this area came in the form of a job I worked a long time ago, I worked for a company
where image was everything; due to the fact that it was a retail company where it catered to a specific type of consumer. The target consumer was a cool, thin, popular, in-crowd sort of person. How I got a position with this company was through my school who referred me, and due to their lack of people to perform a particular task I was last hope so to speak. I worked hard, stayed late, worked overnight shifts, trained team members who later joined, and even visited other locations to amp up that's stores notoriety. There were also times when the store was being visited by corporate offices and I was the only team member on deck to ensure that the layout and merchandise was up to par, that's how much I was trusted with the presentation of the store. 

Through all that I mentioned, when it came  promotion time I was passed over for a manager position; and the person that was chosen was someone I trained, that was the 'body type' the company felt good with representing them.




When it came down to it, the company felt that 'attractive people' attract 'attractive people', so to have someone
they felt didn't bring in the consumers they wanted to shop with them, I was to continue to be in the background, work in the stock room, hired help.


Honestly, the  person they chose instead was an epic IDIOT and didn't deserve the position (dumb as a box of rocks kind of stupid). To add insult to injury my manager at the time hid the promotion from me because he was afraid I would quit and they didn't want to loose me, but didn't think enough of me to promote me...HOW DOES THAT WORK? So needless to say I put in my two weeks notice. When I reported the incident to HR I was told maybe I didn't get it because I wore glasses, or my hair was in a pony tail....REALLY! Then tried to talk me out of leaving, yeah, cause after that I was really going to stay. So you can kind of see why plus size in the work place is a sore subject with me.

For awhile, I thought it was my fault. Maybe there was something I lacked that prevented me from getting the position I wanted, even after I heard what was told to me by HR (one guy in particular, not the whole dept). For a long time I struggled (work wise), I gave up on my goals and attempted to just work for the sake of working; though I wasn't happy. Me being miserable made people around me miserable too. Until one day I became so frustrated by not being where I wanted to be at that point in my life that I decided to start a blog. I did it because no other blogger was discussing the things that I could relate to. I was in a sense searching for something that I couldn't find. So, because I couldn't find it I created it in FASHION PLUS! 

QUESTION: Has anyone looked at your stomach before they've looked in your face?

That has defiantly happened to me. Every time I walk through the mall, go to a restaurant, even if I'm out and about with my husband and kids. It's almost like the size of my gut, butt, hips, and breasts define me more than my killer way of being. As long as their is a size restraint on beauty we will continue to be prejudged without the courtesy of showing who we are. Sad? Yes. Reality? Hell YES!

 THE SOLUTION:   

It's simple, FIGHT ON! who is anyone to tell you what you can and can' aspire for? Why is it because your body is not what the mainstream desires that the importance of your work is less relevant?  I feel like if you have a talent, passion, or connection to do something productive to your life; then you should do it. If your plus size, thick, overweight, or obese; if you are the best in your abilities don't sing backup, be front and center. If you want to be in the modeling industry? Let your stride, and confidence be what people judge you on; want to design? Make something that will SHOCK & AWE that has a great message. The point is be more that what they think you are, and go further that you thought you ever would.

It really doesn't matter what industry your trying to get into or what opportunities are given or not given to you; learn how to make a way from no way, don't take everything so personally, and be your own biggest supporter.

Expanding Fashion Plus: Taking a new direction on the Business of Curves!

Hello my darlings! Being an independent writer I wear many hats. Recently I've been researching ways to grow my business. I've decided to put my degrees to use and get involved in:

- Hosting events

- Speaking engagements

- Creative directing/assisting

- and Plus Size Personal Styling

Although, plus size fashion blogging is my priority; I would like explore what it means to be a full figured business woman. In all honesty it's always been a dream of mine to expand Fashion Plus, and really be a positive voice on full figured fashion; whether its the good, bad, or the ugly. In the beginning of my blogging career I've always made it known that fashion is just the tip of the iceberg, and that women (especially full figured women) have different levels, and situations that if your not plus size won't be understood. 

My goal is to reach the women who like me felt like no one understood their hopes, dreams, aspirations, and
of course their sorrows. If I can reach them through speaking I will do that. If I can make them feel better by being a personal stylist and revamping their wardrobe; then so be it. I want to contribute to an industry that helped me find my niche as well as my voice.

Nordstrom has Plus Sizes for juniors?

Calling all junior plus size fashionistas! Plus size teens are now being noticed by major retailers such as Nordstrom. In the past this retail giant didn't offer any clothing for the junior plus; only for smaller young ladies, though not intentionally ignored (I hope) plus size teens had no where to shop for trendy clothing. That has all changed with the emergence of stores like Forever 21 which added a plus size division, H&M, and now Nordstrom. The only down side is that the plus size line is only carried online for now, I don't know if that will change in the future; but as for now I'm excited that young ladies coming of age will feel less left out and vulnerable when it comes to shopping. Another concern is the limited selection, I would like to see more variety and styling. But all together they offer a good start to teen girls coming into their own and attempting to express individuality.

As a plus size teen, I remember never being able to find the right outfit; and going into stores that at the time only carried plus size clothing for older women that was not flattering. I would see clothing that would be overly sparkly, large un-attractive prints, and sort of hung on your shoulders like a garbage bag.  

These types of clothing choices can kill a girls confidence, it's hard enough being a girl; adding being plus size in the mix makes strength and confidence building that much harder. I excited to see how much plus size juniors will grow and evolve, hopefully it will expand into stores! Work Outfit of the day: Plus Size Working Sexy!

Hello Dolls! I have discovered something amazing the other day while I was searching for a phone case and multitasking everything else in my life, I found cases for my IPhone on Amazon.com, and I stumbled on a beautiful blouse by PacificPlex. The top I'm going to review for you is a Brush Stroked Floral Satin Sleeveless Blouse with crystals in the middle of the flower print, the top I ordered is in white and black in  juniors plus size 5x. I know the size seems huge, but its not the juniors equivalent is about a size 22-24 in a women's size; so this was about right for me.

TIP: When ordering on the internet for any clothing, always check the size chart. Its easy to look as the sizes listed and choose the one that you would if you were in a store. Making a size choice this way could easily fool you, Why? because you don't know where the company is located and nine times out of ten the size equivalent in another country is different than where your from. So what fits as a size 24 in one place, can be a size 18 in another. If you live in the U.S. always refer to that sizing chart.

Front and back view

Though, the color your seeing is not the color I ordered; I wanted to give you a front and back view of the top when its not being worn. The lower part of the blouse in all spandex, which is great for a full figured woman, the top of the blouse is satin and it does fit a bit snug, but the back has some lycra to allow for a bit more stretching room. The neck has a halter inspired collar of the same satin material. When I tied the satin around my neck it made to feel a bit more snug than the first time, but not at all uncomfortable. To make the top more work appropriate I put on a short stretch shrug to hide the open back and give my arms some coverage.  Overall, I give this blouse a four star rating (out of five stars)!
This top wears well and I felt sexy and beautiful in it, if you guys were to buy this top from Amazon.com you will defiantly be happy!

Tip:  if you have big breasts the fit may be a little more snug on you then me so please be every mindful of that.

FASHION REWIND: Style repeats that has lost it's style & new ways to spin a old item

Hello Dolls! I've been waiting anxiously to see what new tips and tricks full figured retailers are going to come up with for the 2013 spring season only to see a lot of the same style repeats from seasons past. Don't get me wrong some styles are classics that never go out, but others are also classics meaning old and tired. How do we spot the difference? Easy, look in your closet and if you have the exact same design from last season and see it coming out for a a new season just in a a different cut or color; then baby you have your self a STYLE REPEAT!

You might see colors and lines like this one for the Marc Jacobs spring collection. I know what your thinking. Your thinking he doesn't make anything for plus sizes; and you are right. But my point is that this style has been done and re-done too many times to count. So if a major label like this is doing it, why not a full figured label? Honestly, shop some of your favorite stores and see what turns up. Maybe a few new items but all in all it's mostly items you already have in your closet.

   Dresses Like the one fits the mold on a new spin on a the classic little black dress. This dress called Take the Plunge available by Fashion to Figure accentuates curves and gives a plunging neckline (which is my go to favorite neckline) with a mesh like cover that showcases a full figured women's cleavage. This is the type of dress a plus size women can wear that she will feel comfortable and sexy in without being to risque, but of course you want to push the envelope just a bit so the back of the dress is is the same mesh like see through lining.

This coat by Ashley Stewart is quickly becoming one of my favorite items for the new season. It flatter a full body and has a great blending of fabrics to give a women that chic look that we all want. For the transition from winter to spring this coat looks as if it can give the versatility that's needed, because you never know what mother nature has in store for you.

Ladies seriously its not what you wear (most of the time), but how you wear it, how it makes you feel, and the confidence you get from looking and feeling voluptuous.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop? Visit them when the new merchandise comes in try not to purchase items that are similar to the ones in your closet. Were all guilty of is sometimes ladies were so caught up in being EMOTIONAL SHOPPERS that we buy things we already have. What's an emotional shopper? That's when we buy things because we want something quick or just because it fits. Tell the truth! How many of use have had bad days at work, home, relationships, etc. and were in need of retail therapy?  Someone or something gets on our nerves and we run to the closest mall to sooth the pain. Doing this not only results in BAD fashion decisions, but it can put a hurting on your wallet and as MOST of us know money isn't as abundant as it use to be; so we can't afford to over spend on under performing clothing. When you feel the need to splurge try doing it on items that can transform your look, and if there are things you need to buy make sure its comparable with your everyday as well as your special occasion items.

Have you got a story? We all have one the important thing is that we keep telling and writing it. How else can we move pass the stereo type of a plus size, full figured or phat woman? The worlds worst judge is yourself, so on this blog that's what were going to work on through fashion, body image, perception, and anything else that will help us to be better people. Growing up full figured: The Evolution of the big girl

This subject has been on my mind for quite some time. I've had trouble with this all my life. I never knew how effected I was until I started to recognize the patterns in the relationships I had or the choices I made (especially in men!). Honestly, it started with the movie Phat Girls that recently came on tv.  Not that I've never seen the movie before; it's more like I watched it with new eyes. What I saw before was a big girl trying to find love, what I see now is a big girl who once was a little girl with image issues trying to find love in another person instead of finding it within herself. In doing so she uses fat burners, diet pills and drinks; only to be disappointed that no change as occurred. How cliche right? But with all honesty its the truth, how many of us has the same story to tell? I know I do. As a full figured woman, I never thought about why I fight so hard to be heard, taken seriously, or even considered a factor. I now have an idea of why; (this is my opinion) I think its because as a full figured woman we are often pushed in to certain roles in life that don't necessarily fit who we are as people, and because of this we often become mean or bitter, some become desperate, needy, or clingy. These are roles we are stuck  in because those are the roles we see portrayed on tv or in real life; desperate women trying to fit in to a mold that isn't made for wide hips and thick thighs. Growing up I felt the same pressure to fit in, and in some ways I still feel the pressure; but it is a lot less, and I'm more excepting of who I am, and what I will possibly never be. Some ideas we may have of our selves isn't realistic to what our bodies can actually be. This is hard to face, but realism is a must! And I'm not in the habit of lying to anyone especially myself.  

Who do you remember in your growing up that gave a positive image of that a plus size man or woman should be?

Fashion is one way we've stepped out of the box with the stigma created around a sexier woman. In fashion I've found that I was sexy, expressive, desired, and flirtatious (well I'm naturally flirtatious anyway!); but the personality and confidence really comes out when your comfortable with who and what you are. How do you feel when your all done up and sexy?

Recently, being a bigger woman doesn't get the bad press it use to. Now we are the lead actresses, the love interests, as well as the best friends and mothers. We have really made strides in recent years and became the new "it" girls of society, IT TOOK LONG ENOUGH! How have you evolved? Can you approach someone and start a conversation or give a flirtatious eye to a gorgeous man/woman across the room? These are some things that come with growing up & evolving into a you that you want to be without the pressure of society constantly making comments on what you can't be.

Originality not so original: how can we get it back again?

Hello diva's! Let's talk originality, how many of us can honestly say that our styles are original? Very few I'm I think. Some of us think were original but really were following what the fashion trend is at the time. We as a whole normally rely on what were told we should look like or wear according to what magazine executives say is a MUST HAVE for a week or two. What do you think about that? Do you like to be told that this particular item is what you should have, and not that other item from last week that looks exactly the same but in a different color? No! I don't either. It's hard enough to find great buys being a plus woman as it is, let alone be told that I have got to have this or my fashion future will be ruined. So I pose the question, what is originality to you? How do you set yourself apart from the thousands of other women, who may purchase the same item(s) as you? I came across this picture that talks about barriers being a plus size woman and I wanted to share it with you all in hopes that it would encourage some of us to break as many of them as possible.
